The Art of Pewter Embossing

Embossing metal—also known as repoussé—is the age-old technique of creating raised designs on soft metals using simple hand tools. At Metallix, I work primarily with pewter, a tin-based alloy strengthened with copper and antimony. Pewter has a long history, dating back to the Bronze Age, when it was widely used for tableware before the rise of porcelain.

Traditionally , pewter was used to create platters and drinking vessels but metal embossing has evolved…and while we still use these classic materials, we also embrace modern craft metals—shims and foils in a variety of colours—that lend a fresh, contemporary feel to this ancient technique.

The inspiration for my craft stems from the sculptural beauty of architecture and the intricate details in nature that I discover during my travels in the UK and abroad. Working from photographs I’ve taken along the way, I transform these moments into metal—capturing both texture and story through each embossed line.

Using texture tools, stencils, and rubbing plates, I add detail and dimension to each piece. Once the design is embossed, I apply a patina—a liquid acid wash that darkens the recessed areas—enhancing the depth and character of the design. The raised surfaces are then polished to a high shine, creating a striking 3D effect.

To complete the piece, I may apply colour using inks and waxes, before mounting the metal onto a canvas, journal cover, jewellery box, or wooden board. If it’s flat—I can pewter it!

Every finished artwork is varnished to protect against tarnishing and preserve its beauty for years to come. My pieces are available through craft fairs, selected independent shops, my Etsy store, and by private commission.
